Make 2016 Your Year of Doing
Make 2016 Your Year of Doing!
Another year is upon us, and like most Americans, many of you have set goals and made resolutions. How is that working for you? Have you achieved your goals from last January or are you faced with the same goals, the same dreams and the same challenges as the year before? If so, I want to help you make 2016 a year of doing not just a year of dreaming.
Now don’t get me wrong. I love to dream and set goals. I love to write my goals down. I love to write and say affirmations for my goals, and I especially love to create vision boards for my goals. It inspires me, it lifts me up and it gives me hope for a better tomorrow. Yet none of my goals would ever come true unless I did the work. Our culture is one that hates to wait. We buy our furniture with no money down. We buy a lottery ticket because as the ad states, “all you need is a dollar and a dream.” With Powerball at a recent high of a billion dollars plus, we buy our tickets and then we sit back and hope to get rich. We look to the pharmaceutical companies to help us lose weight, be happy, get fit, stop our aches and pains and so much more. We want a magic pill for everything. What we don’t want is to have to do the work. Yes, I said it. Work. If you really want something in your life you have to do the work. I have always said that no one can do your push ups for you. Only you can get down on the floor and get fit. Now I’m not against buying a lottery ticket now and again, because hey you never know, but I am a firm believer of an old saying “When you pray move your feet.”
As Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “the world belongs to the energetic.” The energetic are the people not just talking about what they want, they are the people doing what they want. So if you always wanted to write a book, get writing. If you want to be more fit, get moving. If you want to learn to speak a new language, sign up for a class. Do something. Anything. Take one baby step and then another.
The biggest gains you will get this year are from the things you do on a consistent basis. The formula for success comes from taking simple actions and repeating them daily. So my challenge to you is to take one step toward what you want every day, every week and every month. At the end of the year you will be that much closer to what you want.
If your goal seems so far away and overwhelming, chunk it down into small doable bites. Create a list of all the steps you will need to take to achieve your goal no matter how small. The smaller the better. Then take those steps and schedule them into your week. Write them down on your calendar just like you would an appointment. If you’ve always wanted to travel abroad, go get your passport photo taken and apply. That small step will propel you to take the next small step and before you know it you will be sipping tea in London or wherever your dream takes you.
If someone else has accomplished something in this world, that is all the proof you need to know that you too can do the same. Stop procrastinating, dreaming and wishing and take a step. Move your feet. Take 100 percent responsibility for making your goals a reality and doing the work. No one is going to show up and do it for you. The minute you take 100% responsibility is the minute your life takes off. Happy Happy 2016!
