HOW CAN YOU STAY FIT,
FULL OF LIFE AND BURSTING WITH ENERGY?
Years ago a woman asked me what I did to stay fit. When I told her she replied by saying, “I would do anything to have a body like yours except eat right and exercise.” I still laugh today at the thought of it.
If you are looking for a magic formula, I don’t have one. I eat healthy and stay active. My philosophy is pretty simple really. I have created healthy habits. Here are some of my rules for staying fit, healthy and full of energy and vitality.
MOVE YOUR BODY AT LEAST 4-5X PER WEEK FOR ONE HOUR
I don’t make myself crazy about my workouts, and by that I mean, I don’t fret about how much cardio versus weights verses yoga I get in every week. I simply do a variety of everything and I have committed to doing something that gets me moving at least 4-5X per week for the past 25 plus years. When my body starts getting tight, I know I need more yoga, and when I feel my cardio sliding, I up my cardio routine. I keep it simple and move, move, move.
I never miss breakfast – Never. When I am home it’s easy and it usually consists of whole grains, fruit or eggs. When I am traveling I always pack nuts and nutritious bars in my suitcase, in case there is nothing of nutritional value at my hotel. I then make a trip to the nearest market to pick up fruit and other food items that I can keep in my room.
EAT FOODS THAT GROW
I have made it a habit to eat REAL food as much as possible. Food that isn’t processed, comes in a box or has an extended shelf life. I love fresh veggies, fruits, and anything made from scratch. I was recently picked up at Newark airport by a car service and the man driving said to me, “I’ve picked you up before. You gave me bananas once.” I laughed, thinking, “yup, that’s me.” Whenever I leave for a business trip I often have some fresh food left over and I hate to see it go to waste so I give it away to neighbors, friends, and evidently this nice driver man. Its good for my health and for the people I share with.
USE SMALLER PLATES
If I feel like I have been eating too much or that I am gaining weight I switch to using smaller plates. If you have read my previous blogs, then you know I don’t own a scale. I don’t know what I weigh, but I am in tune with my body and how it feels. Using a smaller plate makes me more aware of my portions and I am not inclined to over eat.
SLEEP 8 HOURS A NIGHT
With my busy life, travel and workout schedule I want to ensure that I have the energy I need to get it all done, so a good nights sleep is a non-negotiable for me. I always aim for 8 hours a night, and I can honestly say that I get 8 hours on a regular basis just by planning for it ahead of time.
KEEP IT LIGHT AND HAPPY
Most importantly, I am conscious of my attitude. I work to do the best I can, and I try not to take myself too seriously. When I make a mistake, I try to get over it quickly and laugh at myself. I don’t ruminate over things I have no control over, I don’t hold grudges and I don’t expect the people around me to be perfect. Some days I nail it and I feel on top of the world. On other days I mess up and I wish I could call for a “do over” the way I did when I was a kid. In the end, I know my attitude sets my course for the day and I choose to keep it light and be happy.
I hope you see that these aren’t terribly difficult habits to incorporate, but that they will yield you fabulous results in the long run. These habits aren’t just for me -they are for everyone who wants to live life with energy and joy.
I would love to hear from you. If you’d like to share your story about how you incorporated healthy habits in your life, please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
